Targeting cartilage EGFR pathway for osteoarthritis treatment

AlphaThera members, Feifan Yu and Andrew Tsourkas, contributed to this exciting work recently published in Science Translational Medicine. The team used site-specific bioconjugation techniques to seed polymeric micellar nanoparticles (NPs) with a TGFα payload. Injection of TGFα-NPs was shown to combat the progression of surgery-induced OA cartilage degeneration, subchondral bone plate sclerosis, and knee joint pain. This work demonstrates the feasibility of treating OA-induced degeneration using a minimally invasive injected nanotherapy as an alternative to complicated surgery.
